What's new on the Rideau Canal

A tip of the old Captain’s Cap is due to the good folk in the Village of Westport on the Rideau Canal.  Dubbed the Friendliest Little Port on the Waterway, Westport’s 700 odd souls endorsed a plan to expand its small yet beautiful municipal harbour which is fast gaining popularity with the “cruising crowd” as a great place to drop anchor.  The welcoming downtown shopping district and warm village hospitality is working to improve marine tourism each season.   This summer some 300 feet of new docking space will go into operation along with expanded fresh water and hydro services.  Community consultant Norm Peterson, who lives on the water right by the village marina, recently presented a new concept plan for what the harbour could look like in the years ahead paying particular attention to its sensitive and unique “island” location.  So far it has been well received by the overall community.  Its thoughtful ingredients has prompted calls from neighbouring waterway communities asking Norm to come have a look see at what can be done with their community marinas in the future.  All this interest bodes well for marine tourism along the Rideau.  After all it is now a World Class Destination!  If you know of other communities along the Rideau or Trent-Severn Waterway who are improving their boating amenities and facilities please report them to www.ontariotravelguides.com
